GOP Speeches Report Card

Last week, the Democrat’s Convention contained several notable speeches, including one by Michelle Obama. This week, at the GOP convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, there were many speeches worthy of comment. To that end, below is our assessment of the major ones that provided the driving force for the convention, and thus, determined the momentum of the upcoming elections. Our grades are, as is with everyone, mostly subjective.

John McCain: B+

Explanation: His words were Churchillian, his story is heroic, his delivery was a tad lacking and lengthy. He’ll make a great President though. [listen to a speech excerpt].

Sarah Palin: A+

Explanation: She stole the show and single-handedly shifted the momentum of the election. She was feisty but not flashy. She was substantive but not boring [speech excerpt].

Mike Huckabee: A+

Explanation: This underrated man gave what was probably the second best speech of the convention, a most moving oration.

Rudy Guiliani: A

Explanation: His speech was powerful and set the stage nicely for Palin. He put wind in the sails of every Republican there, it seemed.

The Governor of Hawaii: B-

Explanation: We can never remember her name, but she did a fine job touting Palin. Her delivery was a little bland.

Fred Thompson: A-

Explanation: We’re glad he’s not the GOP nominee, but the man can sure deliver the goods in a dramatic fashion. He gave a good pitch for McCain.

Mitt Romney: C+

Explanation: Boring. Predictable. Flat, a little vague, too. He’s a much better communicator that what he showed.

Tom Ridge: C-

Explanation: Wow, we’re glad those were just rumors about him being the running mate. And what’s up with the speaking posture?

Joe Lieberman: B+

Explanation: Liked having him on the stage and not in a recount in Florida. Had he not lavished praise on Bubba it would have been an ‘A.’

Cindy McCain: B

Explanation: She did not do as well as Michelle Obama, but she pulled off her first national address with charm and warmth.
