Controversy arose after the Miss USA Pageant on Sunday. Apparently a professing gay judge asked Carrie Prejean, Miss California her view of gay marriage. Her response was the following:
“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”
Both co-directors of the pageant responded differently. One was “saddened.” The other fully supported Prejean’s response.
There is much confusion involved when dealing with what exactly are the rights of homosexuals. Many focus completely on changing the definition of marriage, which is very unfortunate and causing a misunderstanding of those, like Miss California, who hold marriage to a high standard and don’t have a “witch hunt” mentality about homosexuals.
Brian Hobbs told me not to give him credit, but I’m going to because I like how he phrased his view of many conservative Evangelicals, myself included. Here is his four-point response:
1) We’re not mad at anyone in this debate, and want to have a loving, Christ-like attitude in all things.
2) Homosexuals already have the right to marry whomever they wish, providing it is someone of the opposite sex, not a relative, not a minor and not multiple people.
3) Jesus Himself affirmed that God created marriage as one man and one woman, which speaks against polygamy and other deviations.
4) True Marriage, also known as just marriage, is weakened when we equally recognize another institution with the same standing much in the same way a real dollar bill’s value is weakened when the counterfeit is accepted as legal tender.
